Did anyone see "All Good Things"? I thought Kirsten Dunst & Mr. Gosling did a great job, but the transformation of Mr. Marks from an easy-going, carefree normal guy into a fucking weirdo who abuses his wife and wears women's clothing was waaaay too quick and not planned well enough. When I watch a movie, I'm completely engrossed. I understand the director probably wanted to spring Mr. Mark's insanity on us without notice, but it wouldve been nice to see some nuances of craziness at the beginning of the film. no?

Also - the song at the end of the rolling credits was a TERRIBLE choice. Completely irresponsible!!!

K just had to get that off my mind.

Maurice Narcisse Video - Night 1

Tonight we began filming the video for "Maurice Narcisse". Jimi Patterson and Emme Pickett are directing.

I don't want to give too much away - but we filmed the first scene at Bru Cafe in New Haven. My fellow New Haven-ites will definitely recognize the extras:).

As we were filming the "Van scene", Jeff hopped out of the vehicle, slammed the door, and went running. When we went to shoot Take 2, Jeff made a surprising discovery that he had accidentally locked the van doors. Oh, and yes, the van was RUNNING. Not a good predicament to be in. Alas, Triple A made a speedy rescue and all was well.

NY Mini Tour FUN FUN

So....I think playing more than 2 shows in the same state within 72 hours constitutes as a mini tour.

With that being said, our mini tour of NY was very fun.

Thursday night we played w/ Magnetic Island and Binary Marketing Show at the Delancey. No offense to the Delancey (actually, maybe full offense to the Delancey), but it seemed like there was a B.O./Cat Piss/Sewage Ghost wandering around trying to make friends with everyone. If I could see the ghost, I would've told him/her to please take a shower. It smelled AWFUL. Alas, we stuck it out and played to a decent crowd of well-wishers. Binary Marketing had some killer beats, and Magnetic Island rawked it out.

Friday night was fucking great. We played w/ Hard Nips at a Cooper Union College Pot Luck/Dance Party at Foundation Hall. The Kids were DIGGING EULA. A hefty mosh pit/dance party ensued. Thanks to the twenty-something-yr-olds (and teens!) that got down. And thanks to Clemens S. Poole for inviting us!

Saturday night was Kevin's Birthday Blood Bath at The Charleston. Billy Brown started things off around 9pm... then the sound guy started buggin the fuck out because the 2nd band hadn't showed up yet. I kept telling him we have PLENTY of time but he was inconsolable. Everything worked out in the end w/ a RAD set by I'm Turning Into, Shark?, & then we closed out the evening's festivities. We actually played Fight Riff twice, a EULA first. Thanks Shark? & ITI for playing!!

I Am Fest kicked my ass - actually, O'Death kicked my ass. They are incredible. Fake Babies too. I have lots and lots of pictures but I haven't posted them yet. Below are a few.

It was very fun to be surrounded by water while we played on the Pier. Ultra hip.

Alyse has just been cast in the upcoming film "American Jubilee" from Writer/Director Ryan Casey. She is going to be playing the role of Cassie, fiancee of the lead Otis. Aside from dealing with Otis' immaturity (at 60 yrs old), Cassie dreams of moving to Nashville, and is an aspiring singer/songwriter. Sounds kinda familiar (except for the 60-yr-old finacee part). Shooting begins in 1 week. YIKES! Better learn those lines.

Day 15 - Recording

Jesus I just want to be done w/ this album!!!!!! We're getting into that weird point right now where pretty much everything is tracked on all 9 songs, but there is SOOOOO much left to do! All the mixing, all the vocal redos, adding extra instruments in certain parts..... aaaaaahhhhhhh.

Oh yea I hate when I record vocals one night, think its rad, then when I revisit them the next week, they are TERRIBLE. Why why why?? I feel like I have to do 50% of them all over again. Fucking annoying.

Tonight we tracked the bass and guitar on the new new song. It went well. This song is so new that we are very open to ideas for other instruments entering and leaving the song. That's good and bad. Our engineers/producers LOVE giving insight, plus the bands' thoughts, sometimes its too many cooks in the kitchen. Poor Jeff's head was about to explode from all the advice of how his bass parts could and should sound. Kinda frustrating. But I'm looking forward to making this track very Dance Trash.

Send me some good vibes so that I can finish writing the lyrics.

Recording - Day 14

We recorded a brand new song tonite, never played live before. It doesn't have a name yet. It's super dancy. It's one of Nate's compositions. I wanted to call it "Wake Up", but that sounds too much like our other song on the album, "Awake". People are going to think we fall asleep all the time! ha. Or are on drugz all the time.

We tracked drums on it, and some extra little cymbal and bell hits. Next time we'll do bass & guitar. If only I could finish writing the lyrics!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Wake up, you know that I'm - Failing - to see ...."???? It'll come, it'll come:)

Recording Day 12 - Canyon

Not sure if I ever said this on here before, but I like to record songs at home first, then bring them to the studio. I recorded the song "Canyon" all by myself (yes I'm a big girl) at home (I use Cubase). I did 2 vocals, drums (electronic), keys, guitar, and these plucky string things. I broke down each track into a .wav file, and brought it to the studio tonight. I was pleasantly suprised how good it sounded, so we're keeping it!!! YAY!!

So we spent this evening dumping the wavs, lining them up, eq-ing, and some other stuff.

Oh I also re-did vocals on AWAKE. I was not happy w/ the originals.

So we got 3 more songs to go:

1.) A Mark Unkind
2.) Like A Flood
3.) Hand Grenade (secret track)

I'm hoping to be done tracking by early june, and fully mixed by July 1. Hoping.

Mini Tour w/ Dinosaur Feathers ~ Recap!

We had an atomic blast on tour w/ beloved brooklynites, Dinosaur Feathers!

First show (4/29) was at The Whitehaus in Jamaica Plain, MA. I am very proud to say that our music started the first dance-mosh pit:) Super fun. The show was in a cave-like basement, complete with cave-y lights and reverby walls.

Then we drove over to Albany, NY (4/30) for WCDB's Basement show on Evergreen Ave. I can't get enough of these basement shows, everyone is so supportive and party-friendly. We took a walk around Albany and grapped some "I Love NY" pizza. How fitting, ha.

Then TWO shows on saturday (may 1). May Day celebration on the Green in New Haven, then a late-night show @ Rudy's (new haven) with The Art of Shooting (also brooklynites).

Day 9 - Recording

Tonite was crazzzy! There must have been a full moon or something. I guess someone fucked w/ our engineer's knobs (ha ha), so all our presets and shit were fuct. Lots of program bugs, too - I was trying to do vocals, and the track kept muting itself. So weird. Oh, and somehow Nate lost his virginity without even knowing it in the studio. Damn horny ghosts!

But anyways, I did vocals on Dirty Hands and Honor Killer tonite. Came out ok. I can't wait to hear it next wednesday to see if it sucks ass or is super good. I can never tell! haha!

Day 8 - Recording

Tonite we laid down one of our newest songs, "Oh Lord!". I used my trusty casio keyboard again, going through an old Stage amp. Sounded pretty creepy, which was good. I think I used Flute +tone bank+ Brass Ens. Jeff put a smoother bass in, and we did lots of trippy/delayed guitars. We still have to do some found sounds for the beat. I'm really looking forward to that part. Maybe I'll throw a sandwich against a locker or something.

Things are moving along quite quickly.

Last night Jeff blew an amp, hopefully that's good luck in the recording world. He put down his pretty sounds for Awake and Honor Killer. He used this dude from the band Title's homemade pedal. Thanks! But I'm concerned H.K. sounds a little too cocky. we shall see. i feel kinds silly writing these posts. there's not much to write.

Oh yea i did some H.K. guitar too... i used a pedal that looked like a 1950's car stereo. It was picking up some kind of spanish radio station through my amp. I want to keep it on the recording.

Day 1 Recording - Dirty Hands

Last night was Night 1 of recording. Got to the Skate Park Studio (or Fuzzy Rainbow) around 9, got home around 2:30 this morning... the session has to begin so late due to the skater boyzzz (and girls!) making their ruckus downstairs. we tracked drums, bass, guitar, and vocals for Dirty Hands. It went rather smoothly. A little too smoothly:) ha. I wanted to sing out of an amp, since I sing better for some reason hearing it back at me like that, but SOMEONE was vehemently against it. I won't name names:). That's ok, vocal performance turned out alright. I did this reeeeeally high backing vocal on the pre-chorus, and everyone kept saying it sounded like Krull. I thought it sounded kinda silly, but we may put it way in the background ... far left or somethin. Anyways, bass sounds nice and dirty and nasty, but de-cockified. I can't wait to blow out the drums, and put some nastiness on my vocals. Should be fun! Some pics of the session to come. Our engineers love us so much that they showed us "CakeFarts" to end the evening. I thought it was a reference to CakeWalk, but no, its actually CakeFarts.

We're going into the studio next week to begin RECORDING our LP!! YAY! We have about 15 songs written/half written... I probably want a 9 or 10 song album. no more.

Saturday afternoon we're going to the New Haven Artspace to be filmed for Hells Bells Productions' "SWAN DAY" Documentary. Very excited to answer questions all about myself! haha. I never know what to say. Any ideas? Maybe I'll make up an elaborate story of how i got into meth and cocaine, and music was the only thing that saved me.

Only a couple shows coming up (SWAN Day April 3, EC PopFest May 15). we're trying to focus on recording. I have a love-hate relationship with recording. A lot of the time what I hear in my mind can never be replicated on tape. Its exhausting. And another thing I love is when you record something really, really late or when you're really, really f*cked up and you think its the greatest piece of music EVER. Then the next day its a complete piece of shit. It works the other way too, so maybe it all evens out. We're recording with 2 really great engineers this time, so I'm hoping it'll go more smoothly.

Saturday's show went SPLENDID. Honey Wagon (CT) kicked off the evening, followed by Les Vinyl, then Conversion Party. EULA closed the show with a bang. Big Thanks to Eric Rex and Edwina of King of the Gigabitches for coming out to the show and taking some amazing pictures! Oh, and I how can I forget this rad write up....

"Eula remind me of sharks in that there is the sense that if they as a band stop moving forward, they will die so they destroy the past in anticipation of the next kill. I had seen Eula back in October, so I knew what to expect from the live performance; tight and precise instrumentation with a fierce commitment to the art of performance.

Not a second spent on stage is still as Alyse alternates gentle crooning with nonsensical vocalalizations in the style of Molly Siegel of Ponytail. She will reach up to caress the microphone, and then step back to lock eyes with drummer Nathan Rose dropping her hands to her instrument as the guitar and drums produce a complex interplay onstage for a handful of bars before that element of the song vanishes off the cliff of the track and the rest sounds desperate, clawing towards something unobtainable and the instruments dance playfully; as Alyse and bassist Jeffery Maleri come together and break apart so often you’ve lost count and as you think you’ve grasped what’s happening on stage that suddenly…silence… a brief look up, a “thank you” and then…

It’s a new song.

Saturday’s thirty minute set was filled with new songs, one so new that it came with a bit of a caveat from the band that was a bit warranted as the track fell apart within the first 16 measures but they got through it the second time. However, each track was “new” in its own way, as the arrangements varied from the copies of The Language of Threat. Sometimes mildly, such as on the Locomotive Rhythm tracks of “Rosie”, and new bass elements on Housewolf; while tracks like Fight Riff become nearly whole new affairs, which I find to be a shame as that opening guitar is as near a distillation of what youth feels like as has been captured in a studio.

Talking to Alyse after the performance, they will be recording the new material within the next month and are looking to see if they can grab any sort of label interest or they may release it on their own as they did for The Language of Threat. Their next show is in Williamsburg on Feb 18th at Bar Matchless. Their EP The Language of Threat is available for free from them at shows or you can buy it from iTunes."

His words stated that this album would not appeal to everyone, and with his stops over the summer at various indie shows(Grizzly Bear, Dead Weather) and ongoing collaboration with the likes of MGMT - we’re looking forward to deciding for ourselves.

Thanks to Kelly Irene for putting a GREAT GREAT GREAT show together, complete with 18 bands, 2 stages, and lots of cool lights.

As always, it sucks driving to Brooklyn. Its supposed to technically take 1 hour and 45 minutes, but with traffic and fuckheads driving its about 2hr20 min. So finally we get to Meadow Street (with minimal problems). There was actually a photo shoot going down right across the street with lots of animal heads and weird caveman-like clothing. but anyways Shea is tucked in the bed of a bunch of factory-looking doors lining a pretty grim street. There are about 35 steps to get up into the venue, a musician's nightmare:). We managed to get our shit in the place without falling, so that was good.

There were 2 stages set up, complete with lights, beers, and a good amount of people. Kill!Kill!Kill! started off the night around 5pm. They were GREAT. and Soooooo super nice. We ended up chatting about the pre-conceived notions that people from California have against New Englanders, and vice versa. The moral of the story was that we should all drop our stereotypes, and find out shit on our own:)

Eula went on next, around 5:30. T'was fun. We had to book it home for another show, otherwise we wouldve stayed for the entirety of the evening. Thanks again Kelly, Yabyum, and Detroitscaresme.

Next show is Halloween at The Submarine in New Haven. I'll keep ya's updated.

Titus Andronicus, So So Glos.... and EULA 10/14

So ... we opened up for T.A. and the So So Glos at Maxwell's (hoboken) last night, yay yay yay!!

I broke a string during Housewolf (our second song) and it was total blue balls. SUCKED. Extremely disenchanting. I should always bring 2 guitars just in case i guess.

So So Glos were FANTASTIC as always. This was my first time hearing Titus, totally not what i expected, but good.

Maxwell's had really yummy band food - it was a pleasant surprise.

So we had three shows this weekend. Here is a Recapitulation:

Friday 7/31: Bar Matchless w/ Taigaa and Renminbi ~ This was my first "brooklyn show" I put together, and it was overall a good time. The highlight was seeing Renminbi fucking tear shit up on stage... WOW! They are super sweet people too. Check them out NOW. The lowlight was the confusion over the door price - I guess Matchless usually does FREE shows, I had no idea. The dude told me to charge a cover so I could pay the sound guy and door person out of the door money we make. Does that sound normal? Anyways, alot of fans got in for free because of it (yes you're welcome you cheap bastards that can't pay $5 to see 3 bands!!!), and we had just enough money to pay the sound guy. Kinda really annoying. I just re-read this paragraph and I sound like a pussy, sorry. No actually I'm not sorry I take that back.

Saturday 8/1: House Party w/ Wry and Skratch Happy ~ Very fun. Good people, good vegan food, and PBR's. At one point in the evening I was hearing Stand-up from one of the members of Wry, something about wrestling dolls and masturbation?... then I remember being escorted into the basement to be shown how custom snare drums are made. Ryan [Kick Kick Snare] Taylor you're the best! And we still love you in those short shorts.

Sunday 8/2: Glasslands w/ Sherpas. Wow Sherpas can really blow your face off, literally. I have no face today. Another possible reason that my face is missing may be because our SUV got lost last night in brooklyn. POOF its gone. Was it stolen? Was it towed? Did someone forget where they parked? Who the fuck knows. To make a long story short, it was found at 7am this morning in near perfect condition. Go figure. Thanks to Mikey from Sherpas for letting us crash at his place and carting our paranoid and freaked out asses everywhere:) WE LOVE YOU!

We just got back from tour, YAY it was great. I will post some hot pics soon. maybe some video as well. I tried documenting the most fun parts of the journey.

We want to Thank the following:

So we had our first show at Crash Mansion last night... very fun. The place reminds me of a sexy basement with very expensive drinks. We had a great time though... Tell Tale opened up (very good check them out) and Pow Wow! (very good check them out) closed out the evening. There was this dude there that came ALL the way from Watertown, CT to come see us - and believe me, that's never happened so our evening was a raving success!

I wanted to post our flyer for our next NY show - June 4th at Public Assembly. I don't know what to expect since we're going on at 1am... I know ny is the city that never sleeps, but what about brooklyn?? :) Looking forward to it tho.

So we had two CD Release Parties this past week/weekend... our first was at Death By Audio in Brooklyn on April 3rd. Someone said we reminded him of The Wipers ... very nice. Thanks Edan for having us.

The next party we had was at the New Haven Artspace in New Haven, CT on april 11- quite a nice setting with lots of performance and fine art. Thanks to Kid Ginseng for opening up the evening, and for almost knocking over Jeff's mom (sorry Jeff's mom!) with his windmills.

There was this really nice Frenchman who had his friend (girlfriend?) take 2 polaroids of us together - yes, polaroids - and i tried speaking with him but i could only say "Merci" and "Bon Nuit"... I get shy:)

Thanks to everyone who came out and bought a CD... we really appreciate it. Next show is at Crash Mansion in NYC on April 29th with Pow Wow!

So, I received a message from a "Jef Wilson" that read "WYBC Interview" in the Subject Line, with a body message of "Call me for an interview on WYBC".... I was very confused because WYBC is a hip hop and r&b station...

About a week later, Jef showed up to our GPCSY show at Yale. He continued to tell me that he wants Eula to do an on-air interview, and in-studio performance on YBC... I replied, "Ummm... have you even listened to our music? I mean, I am ALL ABOUT crossing genres, but would the hip hop/r&b listeners really dig a Eula interview?"

and Jef replied, "Uhh, this is for WYBC 1340AM, Yale Radio."

I replied, "Fuck"

So the moral of the story is, KNOW YOUR RADIO STATIONS. And listen to WYBC 1340AM Saturday, April 11th from 1pm - 2pm for a Eula performance & interview!!! Thanks Jef.

Eula: Language Of Threat [Album Review]

Art. Angst. Awesome. Three words starting with “A” that one can easily attribute to Eula (MySpace), a band so filled with elements of pop and punk and blaring rock that it’s amazing any of them still have eardrums left to help keep them in tune. Language Of Threat, their latest EP, is filled with the hyped-up, in-your-face sounds I referenced when they debuted opener “Housewolf” a few months back.
This sound continues on Language Of Threat, though it’s not nearly as catchy as that first tune. Still, songs like “Rosie”, with its awkward harmonies and driving snare, and closer “Fight Riff” keep the music more than entertaining and interesting. “At Its Worst” even drops much of the noise to be almost quiet in the first half before once again tearing through the eardrums.
Loud, noisy groups are not often known for their intricacy. They’re known for messing shit up. But a truly great loud, noisy group will mess your shit up meticulously, using wild harmonies, complicated riffs, and skilled musicianship. Eula is one such group - the bass lines may not be focused and clear, but they sure are packed with all the right notes in all the right places, and plucked at warp speed.
Language Of Threat is a visual album. It’s colorful and painfully loud and the imagery it evokes are one part horrific and one part sexual. Yeah, as I mentioned before, at times Eula sounds a little like a garage version of CSS, and upon hearing the rest of the EP, I’ll stand behind that statement.
